Wave-transported boulders represent important records of storm and tsunami impact over geological timescales. Their use for hazard assessment requires chronological information that in many cases cannot be achieved by established dating approaches. To fill this gap, this study investigated, for the first time, the potential of optically stimulated luminescence rock surface exposure dating OSL-RSED for estimating transport ages of wave-emplaced coastal boulders. The approach was applied to calcarenite clasts at the Rabat coast, Morocco. Our results show that the dating precision is limited for all boulders due to the local source rock lithology which has low amounts of quartz and feldspar. The dating accuracy may be affected by erosion rates on boulder surfaces of 0. Nevertheless, we propose a robust relative chronology for boulders that are not affected by significant post-depositional erosion and that share surface angles of inclination with the calibration samples. Although OSL-RSED cannot provide reliable absolute exposure ages for the coastal boulders in this study, the approach has large potential for boulder deposits composed of rocks with larger amounts of quartz or feldspar, older formation histories and less susceptibility to erosion. Rock surface erosion by wildfire is significant and widespread but has not been quantified in southern California or for chaparral ecosystems. Quantifying the surface erosion of bedrock outcrops and boulders is critical for determination of age using cosmogenic radionuclide techniques, as even modest surface erosion removes the accumulation of the cosmogenic radionuclides and causes significant underestimate of age.
This study documents the effects on three large granitic boulders following the Esperanza Fire of in southern California. Spalled rock fragments were quantified by measuring the removed rock volume from each measured boulder.
In contrast, volcanic igneous rocks form at the surface when molten rock cools and solidifies quickly, resulting in small crystals. Granite.
A fun series of informal competitions open to climbers of all ages and abilities with 4 rounds each lasting around 3 weeks and a series final on 5th March. Get involved! Rounds feature 40 problems covering all grades and you have until the end of each round to complete as many of the problems as possible. Each problem included in the series is given a number, displayed next to the starting holds. If you successfully climb a problem or just make a zone, place your score next to the relevant problem number on your score card, then go and try another problem!
Your best 3 scores from each of the 4 rounds will be added to create your overall series score. Cup Category. For all competitors. At the end of the 4 rounds, the top 4 males and 4 females with the highest overall series scores will be invited to take part in the Cup Final at Big Rock Bond on 5th March. Shield Category. For competitors with an overall series score under a pre-determined cut-off. The cut-off point has been set but will not be released publicly until Round 4 has ended.
The top 4 males and 4 females with the highest scores under the cut-off point will be invited to the Shield Final also being held on the 5th March at Bond. The final will consist of a 20 bloc tour for anyone to enter and have another chance to win the raffle cash prizes.

First luminescence-depth profiles from boulders from moraine deposits : Insights into glaciation chronology and transport dynamics in Malta valley, Austria. N2 – In this study, we investigate the potential of rock surfaces to provide luminescence burial ages for boulders from moraine deposits. The profiles show that the luminescence signal at the surface of two boulders must have been completely zeroed before burial.
The burial doses derived from these two well-reset surfaces can thus be safely used to calculate burial ages, which may be the same as the depositional age of the terminal moraine. Our results suggest that there is a high probability of sampling light-exposed and even well-bleached boulders from moraine deposits. We thus conclude that rock surface luminescence dating offers the possibility of obtaining reliable ages for moraine deposition.
Even boulders which are partially bleached and thus not suitable for dating can provide insight into transportation pathways as well as depositional processes in glacial environments leading to a better understanding of the dynamics of glaciers.
